Six Key Considerations
Before Migrating Your MFT to the Cloud

The shift to cloud solutions has been relentless over the last decade, and the pandemic only accelerated this trend. In-house software is increasingly being either moved to the cloud or replaced entirely. Managed File Transfer (MFT) solutions have been somewhat slower to embrace the cloud compared to other systems like email, but the tide is turning. Many customers are now asking how to best transition their MFT systems to a cloud-based environment. While moving to the cloud offers several advantages, it's essential to carefully evaluate some important factors before making the leap. Here are six key considerations:

#1 – Does Your MFT Solution Support Native Cloud Features?

You might be surprised to find that not all MFT solutions are built for cloud environments. Some have been developed with cloud-native features, while others have simply been adapted for the cloud. The latter can sometimes result in inefficiencies or higher total ownership costs.

For example, many MFT solutions utilise databases. Some are compatible with cloud-native databases like Azure SQL, AWS Aurora, or RDS, which are optimised for cloud hosting, offering benefits like high availability and automatic scaling. Other solutions might require you to run an instance of a relational database management system (RDBMS) such as Microsoft SQL Server on a separate cloud-hosted virtual machine, adding complexity and cost.

#2 – How Is Your MFT Solution Managed?

The way your MFT solution is administered can have implications for security. Ideally, your MFT system should be managed through a web interface, using SSL/TLS encryption and multi-factor authentication (MFA) to prevent unauthorised access.

However, if your system requires access through a desktop application, often via Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), you might need to open firewall ports, which can increase your exposure to security risks. Unauthorised access through an RDP connection doesn’t just expose your MFT system but potentially the entire operating system.

#3 – Is Your Licensing Cloud-Ready?

Some MFT solution vendors don’t care where the system is hosted, as long as you’ve purchased the appropriate licences. Others have specific licensing requirements for cloud deployments or may encourage you to switch to a cloud-friendly licensing model.

Check the End User Licence Agreement (EULA) for guidance on your current licensing terms and whether any changes are required for cloud hosting.

#4 – What Are the Real Costs of Cloud Hosting?

Moving to the cloud can lower certain costs, such as those associated with hardware, electricity, and in-house maintenance. However, there are other expenses to consider, including:

  • Bandwidth and storage consumption fees
  • Subscription costs for cloud services
  • Potential training expenses for staff who need to learn cloud provider skills
  • Expansion costs if your MFT solution’s scope grows over time
  • It’s crucial to evaluate both the short- and long-term costs to determine if a cloud-hosted MFT solution is truly cost-effective.

#5 – Can Your MFT Connect to Other Cloud-Based Solutions?

If you're moving your MFT system to the cloud, other parts of your IT infrastructure may also be making the switch. Make sure your MFT solution can seamlessly integrate with other cloud-based systems, such as Azure Blobs, AWS S3, SharePoint Online, or Microsoft Dynamics CRM.

Many of our clients want to connect their MFT systems to a range of third-party cloud solutions, and compatibility can be a critical factor in ensuring smooth operations.

#6 – Can You Guarantee a Level of Service in the Cloud?

Whether hosting in a public cloud service or engaging in a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering, it is important to understand the level of service you are likely to receive. For many customers of MFT solutions, their MFT infrastructure provides critical functionality which supports the growth and objectives of their businesses.

Slow response times, high latency, congestion during peak periods can all have a detrimental impact not just on your business operations but also the reputation you have with your trading partners. We all have one of those partners who are problematic to deal with and we do all we can to avoid having to work with them more than we have to. Not an enviable position to occupy.

Threpoly measures availability rates in MFT by making use of regular synthetic user tests. Allowing you to hold your providers and cloud partners to account should they not be living up to their promises.

Is Cloud Migration Right for Your MFT Solution?

The answer depends on how the factors above apply to your organisation. While cloud hosting is gaining popularity, especially for MFT and other IT functions, it’s essential to weigh the benefits and challenges carefully before making a decision.

Thoughtful planning will help ensure that you’re not overwhelmed by unexpected issues during the migration.
